Class of 2012 Review: Running Backs

A few days ago we brought you a review of the quarterback position from the class of 2012.  Today we have the running backs:

Who We Lost:  Stephon Green

Prospects Needed: 2-3

Prospects Signed: 1

Akeel Lynch (Athol Spring, NY)

Penn State’s running back recruitment did not go as planned.  After there was no mutual interest from many of the in-state running backs, such as Rushel Shell, the Nittany Lions focused most of their attention on William Mahone (Austintown, OH). However, after his recruiting trip did not go according to plan, he dropped Penn State from consideration and the Nittany Lions had to start over again. They targeted two committed players: Bri’Onte Dunn (Ohio State) and Akeel Lynch (Boston College).

Dunn ended up signing with the Buckeyes, but after decommitting from the Eagles, Lynch signed with Penn State.  Lynch ran past or through whoever he wanted to in upstate New York, much like current Nittany Lion running back Curtis Dukes. Despite this, he lacks the size, speed and agility to make him a truly elite running back prospect. However, what he lacks in measurables he makes up for in tenacity and unwillingness to cooperate with tacklers.  He has a good stiff-arm and adequate moves to one day become a reliable runner in the backfield.

Reminds me of: Evan Royster, but with untested vision
